A Leg to Stand On

A lonely male Siberian crane at the California zoo had a bit of a problem – he couldn’t get the attention of the ladies because he was missing the tibia in his leg. Seems these feathered friends are rather finicky. Adding the zoo veterinarian’s dilemma is the fact that this particular species of cranes is critically endangered, so this one male crane had a lot of expectations.PMMI stepped in to assist the zoo in making an artificial tibial section from a type of porous titanium. This process enabled the crane to grow enough of its own bone intertwined with the implant, healing its leg. And of course – with the new leg, he soon found his loving mate and they went on to have a family of healthy cranes!
