Our History

Pat Funicelli, U.S. Navy Veteran
Pat Funicelli, CEO of Precision Metal Machining Inc. (PMMI), believes that what sets a company apart is its employees, leadership, and teamwork. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Pat built his reputation as a machinist, engineer, and entrepreneur.
In 1986, Pat founded PMMI in a modest shop with just five employees and three machines. As demand grew, the company expanded to a larger facility, adding new equipment and growing its workforce.

Success Stories

Over the years, PMMI has always aimed to work with a diverse profile of customers, all requiring a unique solution to what seem like an impossible task. Its main focus as a company has always been to make forward thinking contributions to the advancements of the orthopedic surgeries. Along its history, there have been moments that will always stay with PMMI as some of the proudest achievements made by the team.

Made to Size

When a patient in Switzerland was facing the prospect of losing a leg to cancer, their doctor was forced to think outside the box. Due to the limitation in the market when it came to patients’ requiring larger limbs replacements, the doctor knew the only solution would be to have something custom made. Soon after being contacted, PMMI used its first CNC Machine (turning center) purchased to manufacture an oversized hip stems with adjustable bone sections. This eliminated the need to amputate the limb because the manufactured parts replaced the diseased sections, allowing the patient at chance to recover without the trauma of losing a limb.

Only a Call Away

One of PMMI’s goals has, and will always be, speedy delivery. In one project taken on by the team involved manufacturing custom elbows for accident victims. Due to the emergency nature of the order, PMMI had to be able to manufacture the custom implants, along with the specialized instruments for the surgeries, within a 48 to 50-hour window. As if that wasn’t enough pressure for any engineer, the jobs were further complicated because the team would have very little information, especially in way of drawings or specifications. The custom orders would also be used for cancer patients.

A Moments Notice

When a customer urgently needed a critical component for a military project within a tight 36-hour deadline, PMMI responded swiftly and decisively. Despite the late-hour request, our team mobilized immediately. We coordinated engineering and manufacturability aspects, ensuring all material and critical detail requirements were met.
Our commitment to excellence meant that the component was not only manufactured to the highest standards but also delivered personally by airplane transport to meet the critical deadline. This prompt and dedicated response underscores our unwavering commitment to supporting our customer and fulfilling their most urgent needs.

A Leg to Stand On

A lonely male Siberian crane at the California zoo had a bit of a problem – he couldn’t get the attention of the ladies because he was missing the tibia in his leg. Seems these feathered friends are rather finicky. Adding the zoo veterinarian’s dilemma is the fact that this particular species of cranes is critically endangered, so this one male crane had a lot of expectations.PMMI stepped in to assist the zoo in making an artificial tibial section from a type of porous titanium. This process enabled the crane to grow enough of its own bone intertwined with the implant, healing its leg. And of course – with the new leg, he soon found his loving mate and they went on to have a family of healthy cranes!

Nothing New Here

The team at PMMI relishes working with the unknown, every often taking on projects in their infancy. The team is quite often working in collaboration with its client on new products. Whether
it be from navigating through manufacturing process, to creating the prototype, and even advising on the appropriated time-frame, the client can always count on having a product on hand for a critical launch.
